"should i archive the flac files onto dvdR instead of cdR?"

YES

"if what i hear is true, then i can put a whole show of flac files onto 1 dvd as a data disc, right?"

YES, AND DEPENDING ON THE YEAR OR THE SHOWS IN QUESTION, YOU CAN MORE OFTEN THAN NOT FIT 4 OR MORE SHOWS ONTO ONE DVD

"guess i also need to buy external hard drive as well"

WELL, YOU COULD JUST BURN EVERYTHING TO BACKUP DATA DVD, HOWEVER, AN EXTERNAL DRIVE (OR TWO, OR THREE) IS CERTAINLY NOT A BAD IDEA ... IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR END GOAL IS; OF COURSE IF ONE OF THOSE DRIVES FAILS, WELL, YOU GET THE IDEA; IF YOU LOSE ONE DVD, NO BIGGIE, AND EASILY REPLACEABLE; I USE A COMBINATION OF BOTH

I echo Arb. Quickly realized that one stand alone hard-drive, recommended by folks hereabout ("Seadisks" etc) with 250 gb was ideal...many, many shows packed on there (all of 68, 69 and 70) for ease of access and burning, etc. Need to add a stand alone burner as well as those with the system always fail...trust me. Those two additions to your system are between $300 and $400 (for both), but well worth it as you get more and more serious.

Then, if you are trading, the shows come via DVD (as Arb said) and you have a back up after loading onto your stand alone drive. If getting via download, back up a few shows per DVD to guard against the possible loss of the drive. Then, if you also burn to audio CD for car & home you are set: three copies of everything (audio CD; back up DVD with SHNs/Flacs) and stand alone HD with shows in whichever format you like...
